As readers of RaleighForward know, the City is in the process of implementing key elements of the Wake Transit Plan. Construction began this Winter on the New Bern Avenue line. As part of the effort, Council is in the process of applying Transit Overlay Districts along the proposed BRT routes. The City is also conducting station area planning for the Western and Southern BRT corridors. These studies look at potential station locations, recommended changes to the Comprehensive Plan, as well as changes in land use and zoning along the routes. The ultimate goal is to determine optimal land uses and densities that will eventually provide diverse housing opportunities, compatible commercial development that collectively will sustain the BRT infrastructure investment. Because the New Bern Avenue BRT line is under construction, the City is further along in the planning and implementation phase for this particular route. That’s the purpose of the pending New Bern Avenue TOD rezoning case (Z-92-22). Raleigh will continue struggling to address density, displacement, gentrification and sustainability along each proposed BRT line as the City continues implementing the Wake Transit Plan. To help inform the ongoing debate around these complex issues, RaleighForward created this resource page dedicated to collecting and curating accurate information and research exploring how to address issues surrounding housing affordability, density, transit, gentrification and displacement.
