Some articles we found interesting this week:

  1. If communities are serious about ending homelessness, they need to be prepared to spend money, time and implement a clear strategy for building more housing. Read more in Vox.

  2. When someone mentions a poorly managed apartment community, most people immediately think of a profit-driven corporation or a local slumlord, but this article raises an interesting problem when the landlord is a nonprofit. When a problematic landlord is a nonprofit, from Shelterforce.

  4. Rents in Raleigh increased faster than many cities across the Country according to this report.

  5. Here’s an interesting article in the New York Times that discusses the climate impact of neighborhoods across the country.  It has an embedded feature that allows you to examine the impact of your particular neighborhood.  Click here to read the article.

  6. Here is a new report issued by the Cato Institute examining the impact of exclusionary zoning on housing affordability in North Carolina.

  7. The Cato Institute joined with North Carolina’s John Locke Foundation last week for a panel called Keeping Housing Affordable in North Carolina. You can watch the livestream replay here.

  8. This article discusses the reasons and potential solutions for the housing crisis that is gripping nearly every major metropolitan area across America. We’ve been digging ourselves into this [homeless] situation for 40 years, and it’s likely going to take 40 years to get out, via The Atlantic.

  9. Raleigh housing market ranked #2 by the National Realtors for 2023.  This likely means continued pressure on affordability. Read the report.

  10. Here is another report that supports the premise that exclusionary zoning is restricting development and causing rents to rise: How suburban zoning rules are stifling development and causing rents to spike, from PBS News Hour.
