March 3: The week ahead in Raleigh

City Council meets on Tuesday.

  1. Staff will revisit the election/term structure for future Council elections.  In 2021, a Council-appointed Study Group presented a Final Report that recommended changing Council terms from 2-year to 4-year staggered terms.  The matter has come before Council several times.  On Tuesday, staff will layout the process for making this change for future elections.  Click here for the current agenda materials.

  2. Staff will provide an update on its efforts to implement recommendations from the disparity study it completed last year.  RaleighForward wrote about disparity studies here.  Click here for the current agenda materials.

  3. Council will consider a proposal to expand the existing Downtown Municipal District.  Click here for details.

  4. Council continues deliberating on the New Bern Avenue TOD Rezoning (Z-92-22).  Council is likely to adopt the TOD and possibly upzone only parcels owned by the City or owned by nonprofit residential developers.  Hopefully, Council will hold the balance of the property covered by the rezoning at the table (or place it in committee) to continue studying whether or not to upzone.

City Council will conduct another budget work session on Monday, March 11 at 4:00pm. Click here for more information.

Take a look at the City Manager’s February 23, 2024 Report.  It has information showing how Raleigh’s current tax rate compares to the other major NC metropolitan areas:
